Which essential oils are the best for wellbeing?

If you’re looking for natural ways to improve your mood, sleep, stress or anxiety, then essential oils can be the perfect solution. There are hundreds of essential oils and many of them are renowned for  improving aspects of our wellbeing but if we want to get down to the nitty gritty and find ones with a specific benefit in mind then here’s some of my favourites for you.

If you suffer from poor sleep then you’re not alone, estimates say that between 50 – 70 million people suffer from sleep disorders and it’s affecting our health, work and relationships. Lavender oil is well-known for its calming and soothing properties and so it’s no wonder it’s almost always used to promote relaxation to help send you off into a deep slumber. I keep our Lull Reed Diffuser in my bedroom to set the mood for sleep…

Did you know that in the past year, 74% of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope? (according to Its no wonder we’re all searching for remedies to help us to cope.  Ylang ylang oil is often used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and reduce stress. It has a sweet, floral scent which can help calm the mind, uplift the mood and promote feelings of happiness & joy. And who doesn’t want to be happy? Ylang Ylang is one of the key notes in our Island range.

There’s nothing quite like a hormone imbalance to throw your mood and emotions out of sorts and that’s why Geranium is such a well-known (and loved) essential oil which is believed to have hormone-balancing properties, particularly in women. It may help reduce symptoms of PMS and menopausal symptoms such as and mood swings and help with emotional balance. Geranium is used alongside rose in our Eden candles.

Do you wake up with a spring in your step, bursting with energy and enthusiasm for the day ahead? Me neither! Well, not every day! The most delicious and bright essential oil (in my book) is Lemongrass which is a mouthwatering citrus, known for its energising properties and improving self-confidence. It’s a perfect wake-me-up and so my morning ritual is a 15 minute pilates session with my Lemongrove candle uplifting me!

Brain fog or ‘mind wandering’ can make it hard to get things done andso Eucalyptus is really helpful as it can help to improve mental clarity (and combat stress). I find it an effective essential oil to use when I need to focus and so I have one of my Spa Candles on my desk when I’m working at home. Its also renowned for clearing the airways so good to light one if you have a stuffy head cold!

Cedarwood is one of my favourite essential oils as I love earthy, natural notes. For me it’s just like being out on a woodland walk. It’s known for its grounding properties and stabilizing effects on the emotions. It can help ease feelings of insecurity, and promote a sense of inner strength. You’ll find cedarwood is the star of the show in our Woods candle.

Many of us experience low mood or anxiety from time to time and never-ending bad news stories can often add to this. You might find that Lavender oil can help with these feeling as it is well-known for its calming properties and it can help you to deal with anxiety and nervous tension. It’s the perfect choice for uplifting the mood and helping you to relax. Lavender is the main essential oil on our Lull candle and diffuser range.
